‘Coordinator’ Hacked and Injured in Mohammadpur; Police Cite Dispute Over Possession

A young man was seriously injured after being hacked in Mohammadpur in the capital. Friends of the injured said he is the area “coordinator” of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

In the incident that took place around 10:00 pm on Sunday, the injured Md. Ibrahim was first taken to Sohrwardy Medical College Hospital. Later, he was sent to the National Orthopaedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute (NITOR), commonly known as Pangu Hospital.

Police from Mohammadpur Police Station said they have initially learned that the attack occurred over a dispute regarding setting up a shop at or in front of an Awami League office in the area.

On the other hand, friends and relatives of the injured claim that Ibrahim is a witness in a July movement case. He had been receiving threats for this reason. They allege he was hacked due to enmity stemming from the July movement.

Arif Ahmed, a school teacher, was with Ibrahim at the time of the attack. He brought the injured Ibrahim to Pangu Hospital.

Speaking to journalists there, he said, “After Tarawih prayers, the two of us were sitting at a shop in front of Mayur Villa having tea. At that time, four men came and started hacking indiscriminately. All four had their faces covered with cloth. He suffered severe injuries to his hand and also has injuries on his head. He lost a lot of blood.”

Arif said, “Ibrahim is a witness in the July murder case. He has been receiving threats for a long time. Even an accused person inside jail threatened him. For this reason, he did not go out of his house very often.”

However, police gave a different account. Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun of the Mohammadpur Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said there had been a dispute over setting up a shop at a vacant Awami League office or the space in front of it in the Mayur Villa area. It is initially believed that the attack stemmed from that dispute. However, it is still unknown who carried out the hacking.
