DMP Orders Clearance of Dhaka Footpaths by March

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has directed all illegal occupiers to vacate footpaths and roads across the capital by the end of March, warning that strict enforcement measures will begin from April 1.

In a public notice issued monday and signed by Acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar, authorities announced that mobile courts will be deployed to ensure compliance. Those who fail to remove unauthorized structures or materials will face legal consequences, including fines, imprisonment, and confiscation of goods and equipment.

According to the DMP, the widespread encroachment of public walkways by businesses has become a major concern. Restaurants, motor workshops, welding shops, and various retail outlets—particularly clothing and furniture vendors—have extended their operations onto footpaths, leaving little or no space for pedestrians.

The notice highlights that such illegal occupation has created “serious obstacles” for pedestrians, forcing many to walk on busy roads. This not only increases the risk of accidents but also contributes significantly to Dhaka’s chronic traffic congestion.

Particularly concerning are motor workshops and auto-parts businesses that reportedly occupy entire lanes for vehicle repairs, further restricting traffic movement in already congested areas.

The DMP has urged all business owners and occupiers to voluntarily clear public spaces in the interest of public safety and smoother traffic flow. Authorities emphasized that the initiative aims to restore pedestrian access and improve overall urban mobility in the capital.

“Strict legal action will be taken against those who ignore the directive. All unauthorized materials on streets and footpaths will be confiscated,” the notice stated.

The move comes as part of broader efforts to tackle Dhaka’s worsening traffic situation and ensure safer movement for both pedestrians and vehicles.
