In the final match of the tenth edition of the T20 World Cup, host India and New Zealand will face each other today (Sunday). The final, to be held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, will begin at 7:30 PM Bangladesh time. India will take the field aiming to make history by winning their third title, while New Zealand are dreaming of winning the T20 World Cup for the first time.
India have won the T20 World Cup twice so far. In 2007, they won the title by defeating Pakistan national cricket team by 5 runs in the final of the first tournament held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Later, in 2024, Team India lifted the trophy for the second time by defeating South Africa national cricket team. With these two titles, India jointly hold the record for the most T20 World Cup titles along with West Indies cricket team and England cricket team. This time, they have the opportunity to surpass that record and move to the top alone.
India have reached the final after delivering outstanding performances in the ongoing tournament. They won all four matches in the group stage. Then they played three matches in the Super Eight and reached the semifinals with two victories. In the semifinal held in Mumbai, India defeated England cricket team by 7 runs to secure a place in the final for the third time.
Batting first in the semifinal, Team India posted a huge total of 253 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs. Opener Sanju Samson scored a stormy 89 runs to help his team reach the big score. In reply, despite a brilliant century from Jacob Bethell, England’s innings ended at 246 runs for 7 wickets.
Ahead of the final, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav said the team has a golden opportunity to win their third title. He said, “The opportunity to create a record is in front of us. As a team we have played consistently good cricket. We want to give our best in the final as well.”
On the other hand, the final is particularly significant for New Zealand. The Kiwis have not yet won the T20 World Cup in the shortest format of cricket. Earlier, they reached the final in 2021 but had to settle for runners-up after losing to Australia national cricket team.
In the current tournament, New Zealand reached the Super Eight by winning three of their four group-stage matches. In the Super Eight stage, they reached the semifinals with three points from one win, one loss, and one abandoned match. They advanced to the last four ahead of Pakistan national cricket team due to a better run rate.
New Zealand confirmed their place in the final with a brilliant performance against South Africa national cricket team in the semifinal. The Kiwis defeated the favorites by 9 wickets thanks to a destructive century from Finn Allen. Chasing a target of 170 runs set by South Africa, Allen scored an unbeaten 100 runs off just 33 balls with 10 fours and 8 sixes.
Before the final, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said, “We have not yet won the T20 World Cup, which is disappointing. But this time we want to end that wait. Playing against India on their home ground will definitely be challenging, but we are ready to give our best.”
India also lead in the head-to-head statistics between the two teams. The two sides have faced each other 30 times in T20 internationals so far. India have won 16 matches, while New Zealand have won 11. Three matches ended in a tie. However, although they have met three times on the World Cup stage, New Zealand have won on every occasion.
Excitement among fans surrounding the final has reached its peak. More than one hundred thousand spectators are expected to attend the match at the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium. The demand for tickets is so high that their prices have increased several times in the market.
On the online platform BookMyShow, tickets priced at 2,000 rupees sold out within minutes. Afterwards, tickets priced at 3,500 rupees are being sold in the black market for more than 50,000 rupees. Many fans are forced to buy tickets at several times the original price.
One spectator said that after failing to get a ticket from the waiting list, he had to buy a 3,000-rupee ticket for 35,000 rupees. Transactions are also reportedly taking place through various WhatsApp groups for ticket resale. Meanwhile, Ahmedabad Police have already detained one person on charges of selling tickets at inflated prices.
