Bangladesh Lose by 1 Run in Super Over After Thrilling Tie Against West Indies

A catch on the final ball of the innings. Had Nurul Hasan Sohan completed the running catch, it would have been a victory for Bangladesh. But he failed to grab it. And West Indies couldn’t win either. A rare event in ODIs — the match ended in a tie.

In the Super Over, despite a brilliant catch, Bangladesh dropped another one. West Indies took the opportunity and set a target of 11 runs. Bangladesh, aided by a wide and a no-ball, got 5 runs off just 1 delivery but ultimately fell short by 1 run.

On Tuesday, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, West Indies bowled all 50 overs of the innings with spinners — the first such occurrence in ODI history. A bit of confusion arises — is this record credited to West Indies or to the Mirpur pitch? West Indies diagnosed the condition and treated accordingly. They created the chance to restrict Bangladesh under 200 and eventually bowled them out for 213.

Bangladesh's spin trio then brought the fight alive, taking the game down to the wire. In the end, it was Shai Hope’s bat that leveled the match.

In the second ODI of the series, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat. Although the game was played on the unused pitch number five at Mirpur, both teams knew spin would make the difference.

Falling into the Caribbean spin trap, Bangladesh lost their first four wickets for just 96 runs. Saif Hassan (6), Towhid Hridoy (12), Najmul Hossain Shanto (15), and Mahidul Ankon (17) returned one after another.

Still, Soumya Sarkar provided some hope. He scored 45 off 89 balls before getting caught. He hit three fours and one six. Bangladesh lost their fifth wicket at 103 and sixth at 128.

From there, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nurul Hasan Sohan, and Rishad Hossain pushed the score past 200. Rishad played a cameo of 39 off just 14 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes. Sohan contributed a useful 23 off 24 balls with two fours and a six. Nasum added 14 runs, while Miraz remained unbeaten on 32 off 58 deliveries.

In reply, West Indies lost a wicket in the very first over. Although they managed a 52-run partnership for the second wicket, they lost their fifth wicket at 103. At 133 for 7, the match tilted towards Bangladesh.

But Shai Hope and Justin Greaves formed a 44-run partnership that made the contest intense again. When Greaves was run out for 26, Bangladesh clawed their way back into the match.
