Police have arrested four students on charges of gang-raping a female student of a university in Savar, Dhaka. The information was confirmed on Wednesday evening by Abdul Hannan, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station.
The OC stated that the arrested individuals are Delowar Bhuiyan (26), Tajul Islam Taj (23), Shraban Saha (23), and Ontu Dewan (28). They were detained from the Ghorapir Mazar area of Ashulia. The process of sending them to court will begin tomorrow.
According to the details of the case, the incident occurred on April 7. Later, on November 4, pressure was again exerted on the student. On November 6, while on her way to the university, one of the accused attempted to forcibly take her away and forced her to drink an intoxicating substance. She became ill. When classmates and teachers admitted her to a hospital and her condition deteriorated, she was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Later, when the student's relatives submitted a written complaint to the university, the accused became even more aggressive. After receiving treatment, on November 26, when she returned to the campus at noon, she was confined in an academic room and pressured to withdraw the complaint. She was released around 3 p.m. As the university administration did not take any action at that time, she filed a case at Ashulia Police Station yesterday.
An official of the university’s public relations department said that he had no information regarding the matter.
Police have expressed hope that those involved in the incident will be punished through proper legal procedures.
