Market Capitalization Falls by Tk 21,231 Crore in One Year

For several years now, the country’s capital market has been disappointing investors. There has been no change in the situation this year either. In particular, the share prices of large-cap companies in the capital market have continued to decline. As a result, the market capitalization of the top 10 companies has decreased by Tk 21,231 crore so far this year. These companies play a significant role in the rise and fall of the capital market.

In 2025, among the top 10 companies by market capitalization, the capitalization of seven companies declined, while that of three increased. During this period, the overall market capitalization of the country’s capital market increased by Tk 5,339 crore.

This year, the largest decline in market capitalization—Tk 8,480 crore—was recorded by telecommunications company Grameenphone Limited. On December 30 last year, the company’s market capitalization stood at Tk 43,628 crore. As of December 28 this year, its market capitalization has fallen to Tk 35,148 crore.

The market capitalization of British American Tobacco, a listed company in the food and allied sector, declined by Tk 6,539 crore. On December 30 last year, the company’s market capitalization was Tk 19,850 crore. As of December 28 this year, it stood at Tk 13,311 crore. Walton Hi-Tech Industries saw its market capitalization decline by Tk 2,292 crore. On December 30 last year, the company’s market capitalization was Tk 14,768 crore, which fell to Tk 12,476 crore as of December 28 this year.

Square Pharmaceuticals saw a decline of Tk 1,658 crore in market capitalization. On December 30 last year, the company’s market capitalization was Tk 19,298 crore, which fell to Tk 17,640 crore as of December 28 this year. Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited recorded a decline of Tk 1,624 crore in market capitalization. On December 30 last year, its market capitalization was Tk 8,454 crore, which declined to Tk 6,830 crore as of December 28 this year.

United Power Generation and Distribution Company Limited saw its market capitalization decline by Tk 481 crore this year. On December 30 last year, the company’s market capitalization was Tk 7,165 crore, which fell to Tk 6,684 crore as of December 28 this year. Meanwhile, the market capitalization of Robi Axiata declined by Tk 157 crore. On December 30 last year, the company’s market capitalization was Tk 14,823 crore, which fell to Tk 14,666 crore as of December 28 this year.

On the other hand, BRAC Bank’s market capitalization increased by Tk 4,150 crore this year. On December 30 last year, the bank’s market capitalization was Tk 8,672 crore, which rose to Tk 12,822 crore as of December 28 this year. The market capitalization of Marico Bangladesh Limited increased by Tk 1,189 crore. On December 30 last year, the company’s market capitalization was Tk 7,191 crore, which rose to Tk 8,379 crore as of December 28 this year. Meanwhile, the market capitalization of Beximco Pharmaceuticals increased marginally this year. On December 30 last year, the company’s market capitalization was Tk 10,385 crore, which rose slightly to Tk 10,386 crore as of December 28 this year.
