Another Group of Primary Teachers Threatens to ‘Lock the Schools’ Amid Ongoing Work Stoppage

While one group of government primary school teachers has been boycotting the annual examinations and observing a work stoppage demanding salary increases and the resolution of grade complications, another group has threatened to “lock the schools” for the same demands.

Under the banner of the Primary Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council, a section of assistant teachers of government primary schools continued their full-day work stoppage on Tuesday, keeping the annual examinations suspended.

A few days ago, they began a movement with three demands, including salary in the 10th grade. Later, they suspended their programme after receiving assurances of salary in the 11th grade.

Meanwhile, the alliance of twelve organizations of primary school teachers who are protesting for salary in the 11th grade, resolving higher-grade complexities, and ensuring the promotion of assistant teachers, has given the government time until Wednesday.

The Primary Assistant Teachers’ Organization Unity Council has said that if the demands are not implemented within this time, schools will be locked from Thursday.

Anisur Rahman, the convener of the Unity Council, said, “(We) the Unity Council announced this programme after holding a virtual meeting on Monday night. If effective steps are not taken to implement the three-point demand of assistant teachers, a ‘lockdown’ programme will be enforced in all government primary schools in the country from Thursday.”

Teachers affiliated with this alliance observed a half-day work stoppage last week on Sunday and Monday, and full-day work stoppages on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Under the banner of the Primary Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council, a section of teachers has been continuing their work stoppage in government primary schools since last Thursday, demanding the fulfillment of the assurance of salary in the 11th grade.
