BUET Student Arrested Under Cyber Security Act Amid Overnight Campus Protests

Police have arrested Sreeshant Roy, a student of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), following overnight protests on campus. He was taken into custody on Wednesday in connection with a case filed under the Cyber Security Act at Chawkbazar Police Station.

Roy, a student of BUET’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, faced allegations from fellow students late Tuesday night, accusing him of sexual harassment, cyberbullying, and making derogatory remarks that allegedly hurt religious sentiments. The protest, which began around midnight, quickly drew widespread attention within the campus community.

According to Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of the Lalbagh Division Police, a BUET security officer filed the case on Wednesday morning.

“The case was filed under the Cyber Security Act, primarily accusing the student of making offensive remarks about women online and posting content that hurt religious sentiments. Relevant screenshots were submitted as evidence,” said Rahman.

When asked about allegations of rape circulating among students, the official clarified, “There is no rape charge in the case. The investigation is focused on online abuse and religious defamation.”

Following the filing of the case, Roy was formally arrested and later sent to jail through the court. Police have indicated they may seek remand for further investigation if needed.

In response to the student protests, the BUET administration suspended Sreeshant Roy and announced the postponement of all term examinations scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
