At least four people have been killed in a 5.7-magnitude earthquake in Narsingdi near Dhaka, with reports coming from various areas of cracks in buildings and plaster falling off.
The magnitude of the earthquake at 10:38am on Friday was 5.7 on the Richter scale.
During the quake, the railing of a building in Bangshal, Dhaka, collapsed, killing three pedestrians. In Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj, a ten-month-old child died when a wall of a building collapsed.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence has provided a list of damages reported from different locations:
After receiving news of an eight-storey building collapsing in Kosaituli area of Armanitola, two units from Sadarghat and Siddikbazar fire stations went there. They found some loose plaster and bricks had fallen off. The building itself was not damaged. The Fire Service found no casualties there.
In Khilgaon, a brick fell from an under-construction building onto a nearby two-storey building, injuring one person. Locals took him to a hospital.
A fire was reported in a house in Baridhara Block-F, Road-5. Two units from Baridhara Fire Station went and extinguished the fire. It was not confirmed whether the fire started due to the earthquake.
In Sutrapur, Swamibagh, an eight-storey building was reported to have leaned onto another building. Personnel from Sutrapur Fire Station went to the scene.
There was a report that a building at the Chief Adviser’s Office had been damaged. The Satellite Fire Station inspected the site. No damage was found.
A seven-storey building in Abedkhali Road of Kalabagan was reported to be leaning. A unit from Mohammadpur Fire Station went to the site. There were no casualties. The building was fine; people had called in panic.
