After a goalless draw in regulation time, Bangladesh triumphed in the tiebreaker. In the final held in Malé, Maldives on Friday, the red and green team defeated arch-rivals India 4–3 in a penalty shootout to retain the SAFF Under-20 Championship title. With this victory, the disciples of Mark Cox once again proved their dominance in age-level football in South Asia.
India created a great opportunity at the very start of the match. In the 4th minute, Rohen controlled the ball brilliantly on the right flank and delivered a cross. Abrash, positioned inside the box, made a strong header, but the ball went just wide of the post. However, Bangladesh quickly recovered from this early pressure and took control of the match. Particularly on both wings, Manik and Ronan Sullivan became major threats for the Indian fullbacks. In the 13th minute, from a free-kick taken by Sullivan on the left, captain Mithu Chowdhury rose inside the box to deliver a powerful header, but unfortunately, it went just outside the post.
Around the 25th minute, Bangladesh created sustained pressure inside India’s box. A long throw-in from the right flank targeting Yusuf was not cleared properly by the Indian defense. However, the follow-up shot taken by Bangladesh was easily collected by the Indian goalkeeper.
In the 35th minute, India also created a chance from a counterattack. Bangladesh goalkeeper Ismail Hossain Mahin came off his line to clear a long ball but failed to reach it. Fortunately, none of the Indian players could capitalize on the rebound, allowing Bangladesh to escape danger.
In the two minutes of added time in the first half, Bangladesh pushed hard for a goal. In the final moment, from a delivery by Murshed Ali, Sullivan attempted an acrobatic half-volley from just outside the box, but it went over the crossbar.
Compared to the first 45 minutes, Bangladesh played more cautiously and defensively in the second half. India tried to create several good chances early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, a free-kick taken by Omang Dodum from at least 35 yards was easily collected by goalkeeper Ismail Hossain Mahin. However, in the 64th minute, Mahin again came off his line to deal with a long throw-in from the left but failed to reach the ball. Fortunately, Indian forwards could not take advantage of the mistake.
In the 66th minute, young Philadelphia Union star Declan Sullivan came on as a substitute for Nazmul Huda. Coach Mark Cox brought him in to strengthen the attack. However, despite his presence, Bangladesh failed to find the desired goal.
India had their best chance to break the deadlock in the 83rd minute. Rishi Singh made a quick run and delivered a cross into the box. Although Omang Dodum failed to reach it, the ball fell into a large open space behind him. However, the powerful shot taken from there went well over the crossbar, allowing Bangladesh to survive.
After the regulation 90 minutes, the referee added 4 minutes of stoppage time, but neither team could break the deadlock. Despite attacks and counterattacks, both sides finished regulation time with a goalless draw. Eventually, Bangladesh defeated India in the tiebreaker and lifted the SAFF Under-20 Championship trophy.
