Four Including Journalist Anis Alamgir and Actress Meher Afroz Shawon Accused Under Anti-Terrorism Law

A complaint has been filed at a police station under the Anti-Terrorism Act against four individuals, including journalist Anis Alamgir and actress Meher Afroz Shawon. The complaint has not yet been registered as a formal case at the police station.

Late last night, after 2:00 AM on Sunday, Arian Ahmed, central organizer of the July Revolutionary Alliance, filed the complaint at Uttara West Police Station in the capital.

The other two named in the complaint are model Maria Kishpatta and Imtu Ratish Imtiaz.

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) police took journalist Anis Alamgir to the DB office for interrogation after 8:00 PM on Sunday night.

A police officer said that the complaint against the four individuals was filed at Uttara West Police Station later that night.

He said, “A complaint has been made against Anis Alamgir, Meher Afroz Shawon, Maria Kishpatta (fashion model), and Imtu Ratish Imtiaz (presenter). Our senior officers are working on the matter.”

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara West Police Station, Kazi Mohammad Rafiq Ahmed, said, “Allegations have been made that they have been carrying out various forms of propaganda in favor of the Awami League against the current government through social media and talk shows on different media platforms. The matter is related to cyber issues.”

The complaint states, “After the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement of July 2024 and the subsequent political change, followers of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are remaining in the country using various strategies and are engaged in conspiracies to destabilize the state. The accused are directly and indirectly involved in these activities.

“Since August 5, the accused have been participating in social media and various television talk shows to promote the revival of banned organizations. Through this, they are attempting to rehabilitate the Awami League.”

The complainant claims, “Due to the statements and online activities of the accused, activists of banned organizations such as Chhatra League and Jubo League are being incited. As a result, they are becoming involved in anti-state conspiracies, violence, and acts such as destruction of infrastructure.”
