Press Freedom Under Threat: BJIM Decries Violence Against Journalists

Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media (BJIM) has expressed serious concern over a series of violent assaults and threats targeting journalists across various districts in Bangladesh. According to a statement issued yesterday, the attacks allegedly involve local miscreants, charity owners, and even members of law enforcement agencies.

BJIM described these incidents as a severe breach of press freedom and a worrying setback for media rights in the country.

The organisation highlighted several recent cases. “On October 5, journalists Hossain Ziyad and Md Parvez were physically assaulted in Chattogram while on duty. Local assailants reportedly beat them until they bled, vandalised their camera, and stole their personal belongings,” the statement said.

It also mentioned another incident on October 12, where two other Chattogram-based journalists — Jobayed Ibn Shahadat and Asaduzzaman Limon — were allegedly assaulted by a senior police officer while conducting interviews for a news report.

In a separate case, journalist Auritro Kundu from Jhenidah reportedly received death threats from the owner of a local charity organisation after publishing investigative reports exposing irregularities within the organisation.

BJIM noted that no visible administrative action has been taken in any of these cases. The organisation called upon the interim government to take immediate and decisive measures to ensure justice and to prevent further violations against journalists.

“Failure to act will send a deeply troubling message to the international community regarding Bangladesh's commitment to protecting journalists and upholding freedom of expression,” the statement warned.
