Journalist Shot Dead in Khulna

Journalist Imdadul Haque Milon (45), president of the Sholua Press Club in Dumuria upazila of Khulna, was shot dead by assailants. Another person was injured in the incident.

 

The killing took place around 9:30 pm on Thursday (December 18) in the Sholua Bazar area of Aranghata Union under Dumuria upazila, said Shahjahan Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Aranghata Police Station.

 

The deceased Milon was the son of local resident Mohammad Bazlul. He was the editor of the online news portal Bortoman Somoy and also served as the general secretary of the Sholua Bazar Businessmen’s Association.

 

According to police, at the time of the incident Milon was sitting at a tea stall beside Janata Bank in Sholua Bazar. At that moment, four armed assailants arrived on two motorcycles and opened indiscriminate fire. Local veterinary doctor Debashish Biswas, who was present at the scene, was shot in the head.

 

Quoting eyewitnesses, OC Shahjahan Ahmed said that after Debashish Biswas moved away, the assailants entered the tea shop, held a gun to Imdadul Haque Milon’s head, fired several shots, and then fled the scene. Later, locals took the injured to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Milon dead.

 

Police said that a drive was launched in the area immediately after the incident and evidence is being collected. Investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the killing and to identify those involved.
