An incident of attack, vandalism, and arson has taken place at the offices of Daily Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, located at Kawran Bazar in the capital.
On Thursday (18 December), at around 11:45 pm, a group of people carried out this attack.
It is learned that after news of the death of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi spread, a group of people marched from Shahbag toward Kawran Bazar. When the procession reached in front of the Prothom Alo office, they surrounded the premises and began protesting. At that time, police members present there tried to calm the protesters, but the situation could not be brought under control.
At one stage, becoming agitated, they began vandalizing the Prothom Alo office with sticks. In the attack, the glass of most of the office windows was shattered. Around midnight, a section of the protesters entered the office premises, brought tables, chairs, and important documents out onto the street, and set them on fire.
A Prothom Alo journalist said that since the attack, many journalists and officials are still trapped inside the Prothom Alo office. Extreme tension is prevailing in the area.
Eyewitnesses said that during the vandalism and arson, the protesters were seen chanting various slogans, including “Inquilab Inquilab, Zindabad Zindabad” and “Naraye Takbir.”
As of the last reports, extreme tension continues to prevail in the area, and law enforcement agencies are trying to bring the situation under control.
