If Yunus wants, he can turn the entire country into a prison: Anis Alamgir in court

Journalist Anis Alamgir, who was arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Uttara West Police Station in the capital, was produced before the court on Monday (December 15) at 5:30 pm. During the remand hearing, he told the court, “Those who want to turn me into a slave of a particular party—that is their problem.” He further said, “If Dr. Yunus wants, he can turn the entire Bangladesh into a prison. He can do that.”

In this case, police sought a seven-day remand for questioning Anis Alamgir and submitted an application to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. The investigating officer of the case, Police Inspector Md. Moniruzzaman of Uttara West Police Station, filed the remand petition. At 5:08 pm, Anis Alamgir was brought to the court lock-up.

Speaking before the court, Anis Alamgir said, “Honourable Court, I am a journalist. I question power. I have been doing this for two decades. My job is not to bow down to anyone. Those who want to make me a slave of a particular party—that is their problem. I post all my statements on my Facebook. There is nothing unpublished here. I spoke about the attack on Yunus’s (the Chief Adviser’s) house. But I explained why I said it—the attack on No. 32 is revenge politics. It will come back. That is what I said. We talked about how the spirit of July would grow. I do not know what mistake I have made here. I have no links with anyone. If Dr. Yunus wants, he can turn the entire Bangladesh into a prison.”

On Sunday (December 14) evening, Anis Alamgir was taken to the DB office on Minto Road in the capital. Regarding this, Anis Alamgir told the media at around 8:30 pm that night that he had been picked up from a gym in the Dhanmondi area at around 7:30 pm. He reached the DB office around 8:00 pm. He was told that the DB chief would speak with him.

On Monday at around 3:40 pm, DB chief Md. Shafiqul Islam said that journalist Anis Alamgir had been arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Later it was learned that at around 2:00 am last night, Arian Ahmed, a central organizer of an organization named “July Revolutionary Alliance,” filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Uttara West Police Station in the capital. In the case, journalist Anis Alamgir, actress Meher Afroz Shaon, and three others have been named as accused.
