CPJ Demands Release of Detained Journalist Anis Alamgir

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called for the immediate and unconditional release of senior journalist Anis Alamgir, who was recently detained and later shown as arrested under Bangladesh’s Anti-Terrorism Act.

In a statement, the New York–based press freedom organization urged the authorities to withdraw the terrorism-related charges against Alamgir and to stop using national security laws to target journalists for their professional work. CPJ stressed that the continued detention of a journalist under counterterrorism legislation represents a serious threat to press freedom and democratic values.

According to available information, Anis Alamgir was taken into custody by the Detective Branch of the police and brought in for questioning before a case was filed against him. He was later placed on remand following a court order. CPJ warned that if convicted under the Anti-Terrorism Act, Alamgir could face severe punishment, including life imprisonment.

The organization also expressed concern over the growing number of attacks, arrests, and legal harassment faced by journalists in Bangladesh. It noted that the use of vague and punitive laws has created an environment of fear that undermines independent journalism and the public’s right to information.

CPJ reiterated that a free and independent media is essential for democracy and called on the authorities to uphold their obligations to protect freedom of expression and the safety of journalists.
