Former National Press Club President Shawkat Mahmud Detained
Former president of the National Press Club and the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), and Secretary General of Jonota Party Bangladesh, journalist Shawkat Mahmud, was detained on Sunday (7 December) by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He was detained from in front of his residence in the capital.
Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Muhammad Talebur Rahman, said that details regarding the case in which Shawkat Mahmud has been detained will be disclosed later.
It may be noted that earlier in April this year, a new political party called “Jonota Party Bangladesh” was launched. The party’s chairman is film actor Ilias Kanchan, and Shawkat Mahmud has been serving as its Secretary General. He previously also served as a Vice Chairman of the BNP.
