Four Days On, No Arrests: Khokon Das Laid to Rest Amid Growing Public Fury

Khokon Chandra Das (38) has died after fighting for his life for four days after being injured in an attack by miscreants in Damudya upazila of Shariatpur. Even four days after the incident, the failure to arrest the accused has sparked intense anger among the victim’s family members and local residents.

He died on Saturday (January 3) morning while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. His body was brought to his village home at around 8:30 pm, where hundreds of people gathered to see him for the last time. His last rites were completed later that night within the family.

The deceased, Khokon Chandra Das, was the son of Paresh Chandra Das of Tilai village under Koneshwar Union of Damudya upazila. He ran a medicine shop and mobile banking business at Keurbhanga Bazar.

According to police and local sources, Khokon Das was attacked on Wednesday night at around 9:30 pm while returning home in the Tilai area. After assaulting him with sharp weapons, the attackers left him critically injured at the scene. Locals rescued him and initially took him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital before referring him to Dhaka.

Swapan Goldar, member of Ward No. 3 of Koneshwar Union Parishad, said that while injured, Khokon Das had named the attackers. A video of his statement spread on social media, but no one has been arrested yet, causing extreme dissatisfaction among local residents.

Police said that three people have been named as accused in a case filed by the victim’s father. They are Sohel Khan (27), Rabbi Mollay (21), and Palash Sardar (25). However, they have been absconding since the incident.

The victim’s wife, Sima Das, alleged that even after four days, the attackers have not been arrested. She demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and exemplary punishment.

Local residents alleged that the accused had long been involved in various criminal activities in the area. Their failure to be arrested has created fear and serious concern among the general public.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Damudya Police Station Mohammad Rabiul Haque said that the accused fled the area after the incident. Police are conducting raids at multiple locations to arrest them. Preliminary investigation suggests the incident may be linked to a robbery attempt.
