71 Blasphemy-Linked Attacks on Hindus Reported Across Bangladesh in Six Months

A newly released report has raised serious concerns over the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh, documenting at least 71 attacks against members of the Hindu community within a six-month period. These incidents were largely connected to allegations of blasphemy, a sensitive issue that has increasingly been used as a trigger for violence and intimidation.

The report notes that the attacks occurred across more than 30 districts, suggesting a nationwide pattern rather than isolated local disputes. In many cases, accusations originated from unverified social media posts, rumors, or misleading content, which rapidly spread and escalated tensions. Some posts were later found to be false, manipulated, or shared from hacked accounts, yet they still resulted in severe consequences for the accused and their communities.

Victims reportedly faced mob assaults, destruction of homes and temples, forced displacement, arrests, and social ostracism. Entire neighborhoods were affected, with families living in fear after allegations surfaced. Human rights observers warn that the speed at which such claims translate into violence reflects systemic failures in verification, law enforcement response, and protection for vulnerable groups.

The report further highlights that these incidents follow a repeated and recognizable pattern: an allegation is made, outrage spreads online, crowds gather, and violence follows—often before any proper investigation can take place. This cycle has contributed to a growing sense of insecurity among minority populations and raised broader concerns about freedom of religion, misuse of blasphemy-related accusations, and the unchecked role of social media in fueling communal tensions.

Experts stress the urgent need for stronger legal safeguards, responsible digital governance, and accountability mechanisms to prevent false accusations from leading to collective punishment. Without meaningful intervention, the report warns, such attacks risk becoming normalized, further undermining social harmony and minority rights in the country.
