Seven Hindu Families Allegedly Targeted in Post-Election Violence in Noakhali

At least seven Hindu families in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali district were reportedly targeted in coordinated attacks within 72 hours of Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliamentary Election, according to local residents and victims.

The attacks allegedly took place in several unions, including Sonadia, Burirchar and Char Ishwar, shortly after the election results were declared. Victims claim that groups of armed men carried out assaults, vandalism, looting and arson, creating panic among minority communities in the area.

According to affected families, homes were forcibly entered, valuables including cash and gold ornaments were looted, and properties were damaged. In some cases, livestock were reportedly harmed and residents were threatened with further consequences if they did not leave the locality.

In one incident, a local businessman and his son were allegedly assaulted in a marketplace after being accused of supporting a rival political symbol during the election. Another individual was reportedly attacked and robbed on the same day.

In Char Ishwar Union, several houses were set on fire, and vehicles including CNG-run auto-rickshaws were burned, residents said. Victims alleged that they had previously received threats linked to political tensions surrounding the election.

Local community members claimed that complaints were filed with law enforcement authorities. However, some victims expressed dissatisfaction over what they described as a slow response and suggestions of resolving certain cases through informal local mediation rather than formal legal action.

The affected families are demanding a transparent investigation, proper identification of those responsible and assurances of security to prevent further attacks.

The incidents have raised renewed concerns about the safety of minority communities during politically sensitive periods. Observers say that ensuring protection for all citizens, regardless of political affiliation or religious identity, is essential to maintaining democratic stability and public confidence in the electoral process.
