Wasikur Rahman Babu, former president of Badda Thana Chhatra League, has died in custody.
Assistant Inspector General of Prisons Jannatul Farhad confirmed that he died on Sunday.
This prison official said, “After being arrested in September, Wasikur was taken to Kashimpur Jail-2 on September 27. When remand was granted in a case, a police team arrived on Sunday afternoon to take him into custody for interrogation.
“At around 4:15 pm, while being handed over to the police at the prison gate, Wasikur collapsed and lost consciousness. He was immediately taken to Tajuddin Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.”
Former Badda Thana Chhatra League president Wasikur currently held the position of Youth and Sports Secretary of Badda Thana Awami League.
On September 24, Wasikur was caught by people while carrying out a ‘flash procession’ in the Panthapath area of Dhaka, said a former Chhatra League leader.
The leader, who did not wish to be named, said that he was then handed over to Kalabagan Thana police after being subjected to a ‘mob beating’.
He said that Wasikur was seriously injured at that time, adding, “It is likely that after being arrested in an injured condition, Babu did not receive any medical treatment.”
