Rights Body Slams Firing of Two University Teachers Over Blasphemy Claims

An international human rights organisation has condemned the dismissal of two university teachers in Bangladesh over blasphemy allegations, describing the action as a serious threat to academic freedom and freedom of expression.

The two teachers—Assistant Professor Layeka Bashir and Associate Professor ASM Mohsin of the University of Asia Pacific in Dhaka—were dismissed following accusations of blasphemy and protests by a section of students.

The rights organisation stated that the dismissals were carried out under pressure from protests and without a transparent investigation or proper opportunity for the accused teachers to defend themselves. It said such actions violate constitutional guarantees, fundamental principles of justice, and internationally recognised human rights standards.

The organisation expressed concern that the teachers were removed while an inquiry into the allegations was still underway, raising serious questions about due process. It warned that branding academics as “Islamophobic” over personal opinions and yielding to mob pressure sets a dangerous precedent for universities.

According to the rights body, allowing dismissals under intimidation undermines academic independence, discourages free inquiry, and creates a climate of fear within educational institutions.

The organisation called for the immediate reversal of the dismissals, the formation of an independent and impartial investigation committee, and measures to ensure the safety, dignity, and professional rights of the affected teachers. It also cautioned that using religious sentiment to silence dissent could further deepen social division and instability in the country.
