Miscreants have set fire to the house of an Awami League leader in Sirajganj. In the same district, a petrol bomb was thrown at the house of a journalist in the Sadar area. These two attacks on Saturday night have spread panic.
At around 2:00 am, miscreants set fire to the house of Md. Yahia, Organizing Secretary of Daulatpur Union Awami League of Belkuchi upazila, located in the South Para area. Yahia alleged that the arson attack was carried out with the intention of killing him. He was not at home due to political cases. However, his wife, children, and other family members managed to escape quickly and survived. The dwelling house and furniture were burned in the fire.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Belkuchi Police Station, Sheikh Farid Uddin, said that police visited the spot after receiving information about the fire. However, no case has been filed yet as the victims have not lodged any complaint. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed.
On the other hand, at around 9:00 pm, a petrol bomb was thrown at the house of journalist Shariful Islam Inna in the Diardhangara neighborhood of Sirajganj town. Inna is the General Secretary of Sirajganj Press Club and the district correspondent of NTV and the newspaper Amar Desh. He claimed that the attack was carried out targeting his house due to an ongoing clash between the Diardhangara and Sayagobinda neighborhoods.
Inna said that the dispute between the two neighborhoods had been settled at the police station on Saturday. As his house is located on the border between the two villages, the attackers mainly attempted to set his house on fire. At night, six people arrived on three motorcycles and threw two petrol bombs. Bombs were also thrown at two neighboring houses. However, no major damage occurred as the fire was quickly extinguished.
Officer-in-Charge of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station, Shahidul Islam, said that police visited the spot on Saturday night after receiving the information. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being collected to identify the attackers. However, no written complaint had been filed by noon.
