International Rights Body Condemns Custodial Death of Bangladeshi Leader

An international human rights organisation has strongly condemned the custodial death of a senior Awami League leader, alleging serious medical negligence during his detention.

The organisation said the detainee’s health deteriorated rapidly while in custody, but prison authorities failed to provide timely and adequate medical care. Family members were not properly informed about his condition, and he was eventually transferred to a public hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

According to the rights body, the leader had a history of heart-related illness that required specialised medical attention. Despite this, no intensive or specialised care was ensured during his detention. The organisation described the death as a grave violation of basic human rights and international standards governing the treatment of prisoners.

It further alleged that the detention stemmed from a politically motivated case and said the authorities failed to uphold their duty of care toward a person in custody. The organisation emphasised that detainees are entitled to medical treatment equivalent to that available to the general population.

Calling the incident deeply alarming, the rights group urged international bodies and foreign governments to closely monitor the situation and hold the current authorities accountable. It stressed the need for an independent investigation and meaningful steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
