Government Forms Selection Panel for NHRC Chairperson, Commissioners

The government has formed a six-member selection committee, headed by Appellate Division Justice Farah Mahbub, to recommend appointments to the vacant posts of chairperson and commissioners of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which has remained non-functional for more than 11 months.

 

The Law and Justice Division issued a gazette notification in this regard on January 12.

 

According to the gazette, the committee has been constituted under Section 7 of the National Human Rights Commission Ordinance, 2025, to make recommendations for appointments to the vacant positions of chairperson and commissioners of the NHRC.

 

The other members of the selection committee are the Cabinet Secretary; Professor Dr Shahnaz Huda of the Department of Law at the University of Dhaka; Professor Dr Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET); a journalist with experience in human rights reporting nominated by the President of the National Press Club or their designated representative; and Kubleshawr Tripura, former Additional Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department.

 

The Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division will provide secretarial support to the committee. The order will come into effect immediately.
