UK Condemns Violence Against Hindus in Bangladesh, Calls for Protection of Minorities

The UK government has strongly condemned the recent reports of violence and persecution faced by Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to human rights and religious freedom, pledging continued engagement with Bangladesh's interim government to ensure the safety of vulnerable communities.

The condemnation followed a discussion at the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for British Hindus, where a report by Insight UK was presented. The report documented alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, including the destruction of temples, burning of homes, and killings, with some incidents involving families being trapped inside their burning residences.

The situation has reportedly worsened following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024, leading to increased attacks on the Hindu minority.

MP Bob Blackman Raises Alarm in Parliament

British MP Bob Blackman brought the issue to the House of Commons, urging the UK government to act.

“Next week, Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains will be celebrating Diwali and the Hindu New Year. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Bangladesh,” Blackman said.
“At the APPG for British Hindus, we received a report from Insight UK describing how Hindus in Bangladesh are being persecuted, oppressed, and even killed. Their temples are destroyed, and their properties are literally being burned down with members of the household inside. Could we have a statement from a Government Minister on what action is being taken to safeguard minorities in Bangladesh?”

Later, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Blackman wrote:

“Diwali is a time of celebration, where light triumphs over darkness. However, Hindus in Bangladesh will not be celebrating. They face persecution, violence, and the destruction of their temples and homes. I've called on the Government to take action.”

UK Government Responds

In response, a UK government minister stated:

“We strongly condemn all instances of hate and violence directed towards minority religious communities. We are actively engaged with the interim government in Bangladesh to address the humanitarian situation and support a peaceful, democratic transition.”

The minister added:

“The UK is deeply committed to protecting freedom of religion worldwide. If an official statement becomes appropriate, the Government will issue one. There will also be opportunities for parliamentary debate.”

The statement comes as global Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities prepare to celebrate Diwali and the Hindu New Year next week—a time typically marked by joy and unity, now overshadowed for many by fear and suffering.
