Order Issued to Re-Arrest Awami League Leaders After Bail

Rajshahi Range DIG Mohammad Shahjahan has instructed that if any leaders and activists of organizations whose activities have been banned are granted bail by the court, they must be shown arrested again in other cases. In a letter signed by the DIG on Tuesday (24 February), police superintendents of eight districts under the range were directed to implement this instruction.

The letter signed by DIG Mohammad Shahjahan states: “Until further instructions, you are hereby directed to pay attention to the following matters— (1) Leaders and activists of fascist organizations/organizations whose activities have been banned or suspended, who after being released on bail are capable of strengthening and organizing the party and demonstrating activities at the field level, must be shown arrested (shown arrest) in other cases after obtaining bail. Those who do not possess the described characteristics do not need to be shown arrested (shown arrest) upon bail for the time being. (2) In providing protocol and protection, existing laws and regulations must be followed.”

The letter further states: “Previously, police superintendents were informed about this matter through a group message. The matter is extremely important and must be followed.”

The instruction has been sent to the police superintendents of eight districts under the Rajshahi Range—Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, Bogura, and Joypurhat.

When asked about the matter, Rajshahi Range DIG Mohammad Shahjahan said on Wednesday at around 7:30 pm that the activities of leaders and activists of banned organizations have increased in the Rajshahi region. He said that members of various organizations, including militant groups, have been asked to be re-arrested based on strong evidence. However, he claimed that many have misrepresented his letter. He added that the letter was issued to ensure law and order in the future and that no action would be taken against those who are not involved in wrongdoing.
