About 3,100 incidents of violence targeting Hindus and other minority communities have been reported across Bangladesh between August 2024 and February 2026, according to data cited by human rights organisations, the Indian government has informed Parliament.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita said the Government of India closely monitors incidents of attacks against minorities in Bangladesh. These incidents include violence targeting homes, properties, businesses and places of worship belonging to minority communities.
He stated that, based on available information from human rights organisations, approximately 3,100 cases of violence against Hindus and other minority groups occurred across Bangladesh during the period from August 2024 to February 2026.
According to the minister, India has repeatedly raised concerns regarding the safety and security of minorities with Bangladeshi authorities on several occasions, including at the highest diplomatic levels. The matter has also been discussed with foreign counterparts.
He added that the Government of India expects the Government of Bangladesh to conduct thorough investigations into these incidents and ensure that those responsible for killings, arson and acts of violence against minorities are brought to justice.
Margherita also noted that the protection of life and liberty of all citizens in Bangladesh, including members of minority communities, is the responsibility of the Bangladeshi government.
The Indian High Commission and diplomatic missions in Bangladesh, he said, remain prepared to assist Indian nationals in distress. The mission maintains a 24-hour emergency helpline to provide immediate support to Indian citizens.
In addition, the Indian mission in Dhaka has appointed a dedicated consular officer to handle complaints and concerns raised by Indian nationals. Officials regularly engage with members of the Indian community to address their issues and also organise periodic “Open House” sessions to hear directly from Indian citizens living in Bangladesh.
