The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the upcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha, with polling set to take place for five seats from West Bengal.
According to the official schedule, the terms of five Rajya Sabha members from West Bengal will expire on April 2, 2026. Polling for these seats will be held on March 16, 2026. The notification for the election will be issued on February 26, while the last date for filing nominations is March 5. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 6, and candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations until March 9.
In total, 37 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states are set to go to polls in this election cycle. The entire election process is expected to be completed by March 20, 2026.
Members of the Rajya Sabha are elected by elected representatives of the respective state legislative assemblies. Therefore, the political composition of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of these five seats.
The elections are part of the regular biennial retirement process of Rajya Sabha members, ensuring continuity in the functioning of Parliament while allowing periodic renewal of representation in the Upper House.
