At least 31 people have been killed in a bomb explosion during Friday’s Jumu’ah prayers at a Shia mosque in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.
Islamabad’s Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon said that another 169 injured people have been taken to hospitals.
Following the explosion at the mosque in the Tarlai area of Islamabad, an emergency was declared at three hospitals in the city.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. However, several reports said that a suicide bomber carried out the attack.
Videos from the scene showed shoes and sandals scattered across the mosque. People were seen lying or sitting on the floor, with some crying out for help.
The attack took place at the Imam Bargah Khadijat-ul-Kubra in the Tarlai area. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the mosque bombing.
He described targeting innocent people as a “crime against humanity” and said that the entire nation stands with the families of the victims.
