Welcoming the United States’ military intervention in Venezuela, opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado said that the country’s “moment of freedom” has arrived.
She made the statement on Saturday (January 3) in a message shared with the public on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
In her post, she wrote that President Nicolás Maduro has been removed from power for refusing to step down through dialogue.
María Corina Machado further said that opposition candidate Edmundo González, who contested the 2024 election, should now “assume the presidency.” She added that the opposition would restore order in the country and release political prisoners.
Addressing Venezuelans inside the country, she said, “Be prepared to follow what we will very soon communicate to you through our official channels.”
Calling on Venezuelans living abroad to organize, Machado said, “You need to organize yourselves. Engage governments and citizens around the world in this process and commit them from now on to this noble effort of building a new Venezuela.”
She also wrote, “In these final moments, receive all my strength, confidence, and love. Let us all remain vigilant and stay in contact with one another.”
Ending her message with the words “Venezuela will be free!”, Machado concluded her statement.
It is worth noting that US forces carried out a surprise operation late Saturday night and detained Maduro and his wife.
