Afghan Journalists Report Restricted and Delayed Access to Information

Several journalists in Kabul have raised concerns about limited and delayed access to information, citing challenges such as the absence of a media law, economic difficulties, and delays in receiving updates.

Zabihullah Sharifi, a journalist, said, “Journalists in Afghanistan face many problems, including restricted access to information and financial hardships.”

Mohammad Mohammadi added, “We are calling for a proper framework for access to information and the implementation of a media law.”

The Afghan Journalists Centre reported an 18% rise in violations of journalists’ rights in 2025. However, the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee noted that 2025 was an improvement over 2024, citing better understanding between government institutions and the media.

Jamil Weqaar, head of the Committee, said, “A level of understanding has been established between government organisations and journalists, and perspectives have shifted. Yet, some issues remain, and journalists continue to face challenges.”

While the Ministry of Information and Culture has not commented recently, it has previously expressed support for journalists.

On September 28, the world observes the International Day for Universal Access to Information, highlighting the importance of transparency, accountability, and citizens’ right to information.

Journalists emphasised that access to information remains an ongoing challenge, calling for greater cooperation from the Ministry of Information and Culture and related institutions.

Sulaiman Akbari urged, “Authorities should consistently cooperate with journalists,” while Farhanar Fariborz added, “Information must be provided to media in a timely manner.”

The Afghanistan Journalists’ Union highlighted that access to information is a fundamental right for all citizens, improving public awareness and ensuring greater transparency.
