Maria Corina Machado Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 for her unwavering efforts to promote democratic values and lead the fight for political transition in Venezuela, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday.

“When authoritarian regimes seize control, it is vital to honor those brave individuals who stand up and resist,” the committee stated in its official citation.

This year, the Nobel Committee made a deliberate decision to spotlight Venezuela, amid a global political landscape where former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed he deserves the Peace Prize.

In the lead-up to the announcement, award analysts had widely dismissed Trump’s chances, noting that his actions undermine the international institutions and norms that the Nobel Peace Prize traditionally seeks to uphold.

The Nobel Peace Prize comes with a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately $1.2 million. It will be formally presented in Oslo on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. Nobel, a Swedish industrialist, established the prize in his will in 1895.
