In August, a total of 6,148 refugees and migrants reached Italy by sea, according to UNHCR.
The majority originated from Bangladesh (21%), Egypt (17%), and Eritrea and Sudan (12% each). Notably, 24 per cent of the arrivals were children.
In addition to sea arrivals, several other individuals entered Italy via land and air routes.
From 22 to 27 August, UNHCR participated in the Rimini Meeting, joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s pavilion to showcase the “Village d’Opportunité” project in Niger, funded by the Ministry’s Directorate for Development Cooperation.
On 19 August, UNHCR observed World Humanitarian Day and Staff Memorial Day, paying tribute to humanitarian workers and UNHCR colleagues who lost their lives while serving communities in need.
