US Declares Muslim Brotherhood Branches in Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan Terrorist

The United States has officially designated Muslim Brotherhood–linked organisations operating in Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan as terrorist groups, marking a significant escalation in Washington’s stance toward the Islamist movement.

US authorities stated that the decision was taken due to the groups’ alleged involvement in activities that threaten regional stability and undermine US and allied interests. According to the announcement, the organisations have been accused of supporting or facilitating violent actions, as well as maintaining ties with armed groups designated as terrorist entities.

As part of the designation, the organisations will face strict financial sanctions, including the freezing of assets under US jurisdiction and a ban on any dealings with American individuals or institutions. Providing material or financial support to these groups could now lead to criminal penalties.

The move has drawn mixed reactions across the Middle East. Some governments welcomed the decision, viewing it as a necessary step to counter extremism, while others criticised it as politically motivated. The Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates have rejected the accusations, denying involvement in violence and arguing that the designation targets political opposition movements rather than armed groups.

Analysts say the decision could have far-reaching implications for regional politics, potentially affecting Islamist political movements and US relations with several Middle Eastern countries.
