India Strengthens Military Presence Near Bangladesh with New Bases in West Bengal and Assam

The Indian Army has recently bolstered its presence along the Bangladesh border by establishing a new military base in North Dinajpur district, West Bengal, and initiating another in Assam’s Dhubri district, according to a report by deccanchronicle.com.

As per the report published online on Friday, the objective behind this move is to enhance defense preparedness and improve infrastructure along the eastern border, particularly in light of the recent political developments in Bangladesh.

On November 6, Eastern Army Commander Lieutenant General RC Tiwari visited the new base at Chopra in North Dinajpur, located close to the India-Bangladesh border. Referring to a post on ‘X’ by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, the report noted that Lt Gen Tiwari interacted with troops stationed at Chopra.

During the visit, Tiwari also met local lawmaker Hamidul Rahaman and other civil leaders, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between military and civilian authorities for maintaining regional stability, the report stated.

Later, Tiwari proceeded to Assam to lay the foundation stone for the Lachit Borphukan Military Station at Bamunigaon, Dhubri. This new facility is expected to enhance the army's logistical and operational capacity in the northeastern border region.

The Eastern Command described the establishment of these bases as a crucial step in strengthening India’s defense infrastructure and its responsiveness along the Bangladesh border.

Additionally, earlier in November, the Indian Air Force issued a 'Notice to Airmen' covering the entire northeastern region bordering Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, and Myanmar, in preparation for a series of large-scale military exercises that began on November 6, according to The Shillong Times, a local newspaper from India’s northeastern state of Meghalaya.
