India’s ‘Humanitarian Decision’ to Shelter Sheikh Hasina: Parliamentary Committee Report

Comments have been made regarding Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a report presented to the Indian Parliament. The report states that India’s decision regarding her was taken from a “humanitarian perspective,” taking into consideration the country’s traditions and values.

 

On Thursday (18 December), a parliamentary committee led by Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor submitted a related report to the Indian Parliament.

 

The report mentioned that the parliamentary committee observed that India’s approach regarding the presence of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India has been shaped by the country’s values and humanitarian traditions. The report also stated that India has a tradition of providing shelter to individuals who are in severe distress or facing threats to their existence.

 

Regarding Sheikh Hasina’s activities, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri informed the parliamentary committee that the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh has been issuing statements using her personal contacts. However, he clarified that India has never provided her with any political platform or political space to conduct political activities from Indian territory.

 

After the report was presented in Parliament, the issue has sparked discussion in political and diplomatic circles.

 

The president of the Awami League, which has been banned from political activities, and the ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is currently staying in India. Bangladesh has already formally informed India of its request to send her back.
