A drone attack has targeted the United States Embassy in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. This information was reported on Saturday in a report by AFP.
A U.S. official told AFP, “A drone struck the embassy.”
Another source from the security forces also confirmed the truth of the attack on the diplomatic mission.
According to several sources, the drone attack occurred shortly after two Iran-backed fighters were killed in an attack in the Iraqi capital.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, smoke was seen rising from the embassy. Citing Iraqi officials, the Associated Press reported that a missile struck a helicopter landing site (helipad) inside the embassy compound.
The large embassy complex, located inside Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, has previously been targeted by rocket and drone attacks carried out by Iran-aligned armed groups.
No immediate comment on the attack was available from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
Earlier on Friday, the embassy issued a “Level 4” warning regarding the security situation in Iraq. The warning stated that Iran and Iran-backed armed groups had previously carried out attacks against U.S. citizens, interests, and infrastructure, and could again target such sites.
