Delcy Rodriguez Appointed as Interim President of Venezuela

After Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was detained by the United States, the country’s Supreme Court instructed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to assume the responsibilities of interim president. The court stated that this decision was taken in the interest of maintaining administrative continuity and ensuring national security.

On Sunday (January 4), a BBC report stated that the court adopted this interim arrangement to prevent a power vacuum in state governance in the absence of President Maduro. The court’s ruling said that, under the current circumstances, it is essential to keep the government’s day-to-day operations, state security, and constitutional framework functioning.

The ruling further mentioned that, in light of the president’s absence, the court will later conduct a detailed review and make decisions regarding which legal frameworks will remain effective to ensure the legitimacy of state governance, the limits of authority, and the protection of sovereignty.

Through this decision, an interim state leadership structure has temporarily come into effect in Venezuela. However, this shift of power has created renewed political and diplomatic discussions at the international level.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump commented that if Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez takes steps in line with U.S. expectations, there would be no need to deploy American troops directly in the country. Responding to a question from a New York Post journalist, Trump said, “We have spoken with her multiple times; she understands the situation.”

Trump further claimed that Delcy Rodríguez has already been sworn in as Venezuela’s interim president and has agreed to work in coordination with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

After the detention of Nicolás Maduro, intense discussions have begun in the international arena regarding who will hold real power in Venezuela. Analysts believe that this interim leadership arrangement could have a significant impact on the country’s future political direction and questions of sovereignty.
