Pakistan Decides to Join Trump’s Gaza Peace Council

Pakistan has decided to join the ‘peace council’ announced by US President Donald Trump on Gaza. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the decision in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement said that Pakistan has taken the decision under the framework of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 as part of efforts to enhance cooperation in implementing the Gaza peace plan.

It also said that the Trump administration last week invited several countries to join the peace council and related bodies. These councils and institutions will be responsible for overseeing post-war reconstruction and governance in Gaza.

The formal announcement of Trump’s peace council is scheduled to be made on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. It is learned that the council has primarily been formed to supervise Gaza’s reconstruction. However, the draft charter indicates that its activities will not be limited only to the Palestinian territory.

In the statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said that Islamabad hopes the establishment of the council will pave the way for tangible steps toward a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, increased humanitarian assistance, and reconstruction.

Pakistan further hopes that the initiative will lead to the launch of a political process within a credible and defined timeframe aimed at ensuring Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, in line with international recognition and relevant United Nations resolutions.

On Wednesday, Israel also accepted the invitation to join the peace council. In a statement issued today, the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the prime minister has announced his acceptance of the invitation from US President Donald Trump and will join the ‘peace council’ formed with global leaders.
