U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that the United States will “run” Venezuela until a “safe, proper, and just transition of power” is ensured. He made the remarks on Saturday morning local time in the U.S. state of Florida during a press conference.
Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump said that a “partnership” between the United States and Venezuela would make the people of the country “wealthy, self-reliant, and secure.”
Shortly before that, Trump posted a photo on his own social media platform, Truth Social. In the post, he claimed that the image shows Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro inside the U.S. Navy’s amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima.
The Iwo Jima is an amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy. Earlier, Trump had told Fox News that the Venezuelan president was being taken to the United States aboard that ship.
According to the BBC, the person seen in the photo wearing a gray tracksuit, with eyes covered and headphones on, appeared to be Nicolás Maduro.
Trump further claimed that the United States had carried out a major attack on Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, and had detained President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, before flying them out of the country by helicopter.
However, these claims have not yet been officially confirmed by the Venezuelan government or any independent international sources.
