Soros-Funded Group Accused of Campaign to Shut Down Musk’s Twitter

A grantmaking network founded by billionaire investor George Soros has been financially supporting a controversial UK-based nonprofit accused of trying to “kill” Elon Musk’s X platform and push for broader censorship of conservative media, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

According to publicly available records from the Open Society Foundations (OSF), the organization awarded a $250,000 grant last year to the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) for “general support.” While CCDH describes itself as a watchdog holding social media platforms accountable for promoting hatred and misinformation, critics argue that the group has used its influence to pressure advertisers, advocate for deplatforming campaigns, and silence outlets it opposes ideologically.

The CCDH—founded by former Labour Party political adviser Imran Ahmed—has repeatedly singled out conservative publishers including The Federalist and The Daily Wire, accusing them of spreading racist or extremist content. Reports also claim the group has lobbied US policymakers to establish an “independent digital regulator,” a step opponents see as an attempt to centralize control over online speech.

Although the CCDH has criticized multiple social networks for their moderation policies, its hostility toward X (formerly Twitter) has been especially intense. Internal documents obtained by whistleblowers and later published by journalists reportedly listed “Kill Musk’s Twitter” as CCDH’s primary strategic objective for the year.

Elon Musk has openly clashed with both the CCDH and Soros. Last year, the X CEO attempted—but failed—to sue the NGO for what he described as a coordinated “fear campaign” intended to scare off advertisers and financially damage the platform. Musk has also accused Soros of committing “crimes against humanity” and of bankrolling efforts to undermine Tesla.

Former US President Donald Trump has likewise pledged to pursue legal action against Soros, alleging that the billionaire has used “professional agitators” to fuel unrest across America.

For years, Soros and his global network of NGOs have faced criticism from political figures and activists who argue that they interfere in domestic politics, influence media ecosystems, and attempt to suppress dissenting or conservative viewpoints. Supporters, however, claim that Soros funds groups committed to defending democracy, fighting extremism, and promoting human rights.
