Merry Christmas today

Today, Thursday, is the largest religious festival of the Christian community, “Merry Christmas.” The founder of this religion, Jesus Christ, was born in Bethlehem at this time. Christians observe this day as “Merry Christmas.” The Christian community believes that the Lord Jesus came into this world to guide humankind on the path of truth and justice by proclaiming the glory of the Creator.

Like other countries of the world, Christians in Bangladesh will also celebrate “Merry Christmas” today with due religious solemnity and rituals, joy and festivity, and prayers. On this occasion, churches, the religious institutions of Christians, have been decorated in a new manner across the country, including the capital Dhaka. In addition, from Wednesday (24 December) evening, arrangements for decorative lighting have been made at various churches and star hotels. Alongside this, from 7:00 pm on this day, the formal observance of Christmas began with prayers.

On the occasion of Christmas, prayers will be held in all churches of the country. On Thursday (25 December) at 7:00 am, the first prayer will be held at the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Tejgaon.

Father Jayanta S. Gomez, the parish priest of Tejgaon Parish, said that this year the Christmas celebration may be somewhat different for us. Even in the changed situation of the country, we want to celebrate our Christmas festival peacefully. By the grace of God, by His mercy, we want to rise above all fears and celebrate Christmas according to our overall preparations. Because Christmas is a festival—He who is coming among us is Lord Jesus Christ Himself, the Son of God, who wants to give us peace. He has come to resolve the conflicts among us, to destroy all kinds of divisions, violence, hatred, chaos, clashes, and these evil forces that exist among us, and by coming He will bring peace to this world.

He further said that He will give fraternity, love, affection, compassion, peace, and joy among all. And with His arrival, this world will turn into a new creation. Therefore, to all our Bengali and indigenous Christian brothers and sisters spread across Bangladesh and different countries of the world—who are Bengali-speaking—we extend Christmas greetings to everyone. Let us celebrate Christmas together from our respective places.
