Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Chief Whip of the Opposition, has claimed that incidents of violence against women and rape have increased across the country since the BNP formed the government.
He made the allegation while speaking as the chief guest at the NCP’s Dhaka organisational divisional iftar and prayer gathering held on Friday (March 6) at the Friends Club field in Uttara in the capital.
Nahid Islam said, “A woman was raped in Hatiya of Noakhali for voting for Shapla Koli. Across the country, violence against women and child rape are continuing. Even after all this, civil society and women’s rights activists remain silent.”
He also said that even if others remain silent, the National Citizen Party will not stay quiet. “The NCP will always raise its voice to ensure people’s rights,” he added.
Speaking about the President, the opposition Chief Whip said, “The current President used to end his speeches with ‘Joy Bangla’, but now he ends them with ‘Zindabad’. The entire country is running like this. Only ‘Joy Bangla’ has been replaced by ‘Bangladesh Zindabad’. One party has simply replaced another, but the fate of the people has not changed.”
Among the special guests at the iftar event were Nasiruddin Patwary, Chief Coordinator of the National Citizen Party, and party spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, along with central and Dhaka divisional leaders of the party.
