Students Block Roads Across the Capital Again Today, Causing Severe Traffic Congestion and Suffering

Demanding the issuance of the ordinance for the proposed Dhaka Central University for seven major colleges of Dhaka, many students of those colleges blocked Science Lab intersection and Mirpur Technical intersection in the capital.

Today, Thursday, at around 12:30 PM, students brought out a procession from Dhaka College. At 12:40 PM, they blocked the Science Lab intersection.

Students from Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Bangla College, and Titumir College took part in the procession. They chanted slogans such as “We want justice,” “State, your time is over, issue the ordinance,” and “Who am I, who are you, DCU, DCU.”

Faruk Hasan, a student of Kabi Nazrul Government College, said, “We have only one demand — the ordinance of Dhaka Central University must be issued. We do not want to give any more time.”

Md Hanif came from Savar. He was going to Gulistan. But due to the road blockade, he got stuck at the Science Lab intersection. He said, “How many more demands will be fulfilled? Whoever wants is blocking roads wherever they like. Life has become unbearable. There is no one to look after this. Is there any government in the country or not? If there is, please take initiatives to reduce people’s suffering — this is my request.”

Due to the road blockade by the students, traffic movement on Mirpur Road and other surrounding roads has come to a halt. As a result, people have fallen into severe suffering. Unable to find vehicles, they are walking to their destinations.

Yesterday, Wednesday, many students of those colleges also carried out blockade programs at Science Lab intersection, Technical intersection, and Tantibazar intersection in Old Dhaka. With the same demand, students also blocked roads at Mohakhali for a short time.

On the other hand, demanding justice for the murder of a fellow student and the arrest of those involved, students of Tejgaon College blocked roads in the Farmgate area of the capital.

From 11 AM yesterday until evening, these five important locations in the capital were blocked at different times. This caused severe traffic congestion on the concerned roads and surrounding areas. Passengers and drivers faced extreme suffering.
