Freedom Fighter Jogesh Roy and His Wife Brutally Murdered in Taraganj, Rangpur

The throat-slit bodies of retired head teacher and freedom fighter Jogesh Chandra Roy (75) and his wife Surabana Roy (60) were recovered in Khiarpara village of Kursha Union in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur. This tragic incident occurred late Saturday night (December 6) at their own residence.

Meanwhile, deep grief, anger, and fear have spread throughout the area following the killing of freedom fighter Jogesh Chandra Roy and his wife Surabana Roy by slitting their throats. As an elderly freedom fighter from the minority community and his wife were targeted and murdered with precision, locals believe the incident was pre-planned.

The incident came to light early Saturday morning. After repeated knocking went unanswered, a neighbor named Deepak climbed over the gate and entered the house. He found Surabana Roy lying with her throat slit in the kitchen and Jogesh Roy similarly killed in the bedroom. He immediately informed local residents. Police later arrived and recovered the bodies.

Locals claim that the manner, timing, and target selection of the killings do not resemble an ordinary crime. They believe it could be the work of an organized group driven by anti-liberation and communal motives.

They suspect that such a targeted attack may have been carried out with intentions such as spreading fear among the minority community, taking retaliatory action against a freedom fighter and his family, creating instability in the area, and heightening communal tensions.

The murder has intensified concerns amid a pattern of continuous intimidation, attacks, and persecution against minority communities in different regions. Considering the historical attacks on freedom fighter families and the long-standing pattern of violence fueled by hatred toward minorities, many see this as part of a broader plan.

Law enforcement agencies have not yet formally identified any specific group involved. Although they have confirmed that the incident was a planned killing, they declined to comment on the motive or the groups behind it.

However, it is known that both communal motives and the possible involvement of anti-liberation groups are being examined in the investigation.

Meanwhile, members of the minority community say that repeated incidents of this nature have left them even more terrified. They claim, “This is not just an attack on one family—this is a message intended to intimidate the entire community.”
