Ban on Awami League activities “undemocratic”: 101 journalists statement

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has passed a law in parliament banning the activities of the Bangladesh Awami League. However, banning the activities of a political party through legal means is contrary to democratic practice. In protest against this development, 101 journalists have issued a statement.

“We, journalists who believe in progressive and democratic values, express deep concern and anxiety over the fact that the historic political organization Bangladesh Awami League, which led the Liberation War, has had its political activities banned first through an ordinance issued by the interim Yunus government, and later through legislation enacted by the BNP government.

The foundation of democracy lies in freedom of expression, political pluralism, and the people’s right to form opinions freely.

Banning the activities of any political party through administrative or legal processes is contrary to democratic practice and may set a dangerous precedent for future political culture.

We believe that political differences must be resolved through political and democratic means not through the application of law or force.

Banning a political party does not provide a lasting solution; rather, it increases division, intolerance, and political instability.

We call upon all concerned parties to ensure an inclusive and tolerant political environment based on democratic values, rule of law, and human rights.

We also urge the international community, human rights organizations, and civil society to closely monitor the situation and play a constructive role in protecting democratic rights.

Democracy must remain open, inclusive, tolerant, and justice-based.”
