Only Participatory Elections Can Restore Public Trust, Says Sheikh Hasina

At a time when various discussions and expectations have emerged in Bangladesh’s political arena regarding the upcoming national election, Awami League President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has clearly outlined her position on the country’s democratic future. She stated that only a free, fair, and participatory election can ensure political stability and restore public confidence.

According to Sheikh Hasina, democracy is not merely an electoral process it is a reflection of people’s rights, freedom of expression, and active public participation in state governance. She emphasized that “an election in which people of all classes and opinions do not participate can never be fully acceptable.”

Highlighting the importance of political tolerance, she said that competition and differences of opinion will exist, but they must remain within a peaceful and constitutional framework. She also mentioned that the Awami League has always believed in democratic practice and remains steadfast in its commitment to come to power through the people’s vote.

In the interview, Sheikh Hasina also referred to Bangladesh’s development journey. Under her leadership, the country has achieved significant progress in infrastructure development, power generation, digitalization, women’s empowerment, and poverty alleviation. She noted that maintaining these achievements requires political stability and a credible election.

She further stated that if an independent Election Commission, the rule of law, and a neutral role of the administration are ensured, people will spontaneously go to the polling centers, and the electoral process will gain credibility at the international level as well.

Expressing optimism, Sheikh Hasina said that the people of Bangladesh believe in democracy. They will peacefully exercise their rights and determine future leadership through their votes. According to her, this conscious participation of the people will transform Bangladesh into an even stronger state.

The Awami League President said that the people expect politics to move toward solutions, not conflict. To fulfill that expectation, the Awami League remains committed to democratic values, development, and people-oriented politics.

She firmly expressed hope that the upcoming election will be regarded as a responsible, participatory, and dignified democratic chapter in Bangladesh’s history where the people’s verdict will be the final decision.
