Ahead of Martyred Intellectuals Day and Victory Day, as in every year, Dhaka University Film Society has once again organized a three-day event titled “Smritir Bijoy 2025.” The organization disclosed this information through an invitation letter on Friday.

The organization stated that, as in previous years, the three-day program will begin by commemorating the nation’s radiant sons—the intellectuals who were martyred on December 14, 1971. Over the following two days, Victory Day will be celebrated through various joyful and enthusiastic activities, including open screenings of Liberation War–themed films, lantern flying, lighting of lamps, and wall art.

Dhaka University Film Society is one of the pioneer organizations of the film movement in Bangladesh. Since its establishment in the 1960s, the organization has been playing a memorable role in expanding film culture, creating audience awareness, and advancing film analysis and practice. DUFS is a member of the Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies and is also known for organizing various short and feature-length film festivals.

The most notable event organized by the society is the “Amar Bhashar Cholochitro” festival. This festival is held every year to introduce Bengali-language films to general audiences and make them more appealing. The festival was first launched in 2002 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Language Movement, and since 2007 it has been held regularly under the name “Amar Bhashar Cholochitro.” Since 2017, the best Bengali film of the festival has been awarded the prestigious “Hiralal Sen Medal.”

In addition, since 2007, DUFS has been organizing the International Inter-University Short Film Festival. Young filmmakers from different countries around the world participate in this festival. In the 2017 edition, 1,702 films were submitted from 96 countries. A total of 200 selected films were screened at various cultural centers in the capital, the TSC Auditorium, and Star Cineplex. The best film of the festival receives the “Zahir Raihan Medal,” and the best Bangladeshi film receives the “Tareque Masud Medal.”

To expand film practice, DUFS regularly organizes reading circles, film orientation courses, film appreciation courses, and seminars. For new students, the organization arranges “Film for Freshers.” Only first-year students of Dhaka University can become members of the society through an oral interview.

On nationally significant days, the organization also arranges open-air film screenings at the TSC premises.
