Female Students Protest at Dhaka University Over Jamaat Ameer’s ‘Misogynistic’ Post

A group of female students staged a protest at Dhaka University over an allegedly “misogynistic” post published on social media by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman. On Sunday (2:00 PM), a rally and symbolic broom procession were held at the base of the university’s Anti-Terrorism Raju Sculpture under the banner “Broom Procession in Protest Against the Insult of Working Women.”

Participants in the gathering displayed placards with various slogans and demanded the protection of women’s dignity and rights. Student Federation leader Seema Akhtar alleged that women face harassment and bullying online whenever they speak out about women’s rights in the country. “Leaders and activists of a particular political party are attacking women on social media using fake and bot IDs,” she said.

On Saturday, a post regarding women’s leadership and working women circulated from Shafiqur Rahman’s verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, triggering widespread criticism on social media. Later, Jamaat’s Election Steering Committee member and former Islami Chhatra Shibir president Sirajul Islam filed a General Diary (GD) at Hatirjheel Police Station, claiming that the post had been made after the account was “hacked.”

Questioning this claim, Socialist Student Front President Mukta Barai said, “Evidence of the hacking allegation must be presented before the public.” Student Susmita Sarkar stated that such remarks have been coming repeatedly and are degrading toward women.

From the gathering, protesters demanded a public apology from the Jamaat Ameer. They also called for ensuring “respect for women’s labor” and urged an end to derogatory statements against women. On the same day, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal also protested the post through a separate program.
